For quite some time, I've wondered how I could get NotFox content into a print format. I'm excessively fond of print, not only for the tangible experience, but also for the longevity and durability. I started experimenting with print formats in 2020, but was unsure about copyright issues, and so I set the project aside.
Fast forward to 2023, and a lot has changed. Specifically, news media outlets asked the U.S. Copyright Office to introduce new protections for their content, aimed at curtailing news aggregator websites (which NotFox could reasonably be lumped in with). After a couple years of research, the Copyright office declined to introduce new protections, but they also clarified many points in the process. One of those points was the protectability of headlines.
If you'd like to understand for yourself, see The U.S. Copyright Office Circular 33, Works Not Protected by Copyright (March 2021), and the publication titled Copyright Protections for Press Publishers, A Report of the Register of Copyrights (June 2022), as well as Written Additional Comments in Response to U. S. Copyright Office's Publishers' Protection Study: Request for Additional Comments, 86 Fed. Reg. 62,215 (Nov. 9, 2021).
The long and short of it is this: headlines, in almost all cases, aren't something you can claim copyrights on. This new knowledge has enabled a project I've been wanting to pursue: NotFox Headline Histories. I've started the project off with a book, NotFox Headline History: The Covid Years (2020-2023). The book is available now on Amazon:
